Introduction
This guide explains how to add your Hosting Ireland email account to Apple Mail on macOS using IMAP.
We recommend using IMAP when setting up your email account. IMAP keeps your emails stored on the mail server and syncs them between Webmail, your Mac and any other devices using the same email account.
Before you start
Before setting up your email account, make sure you have:
- Created the email account in cPanel.
- The full email address you want to add.
- The password for that email account.
- Your incoming and outgoing mail server settings from cPanel.
For help creating an email account, see:
How to create an email account
For help finding your email settings, see:
How to find your email settings
We also recommend logging in to Webmail before setting up the account in Apple Mail. This confirms that the email address and password are correct.
For help logging in to Webmail, see:
If you cannot log in to Webmail, reset the email password first:
How to reset your email password
Step One
Open the Mail app on your Mac.
If this is the first email account being added to Mail, you may be taken straight to the account setup screen.
If Mail is already set up with another account, select Mail from the menu bar, then choose Add Account.
Step Two
Enter the email address you want to add, then select Continue.
If Apple Mail asks you to choose an account provider, select Other Mail Account, then continue.
Step Three
Enter the first set of account details.
Name
Enter your name or business name. This is the name people will see when you send email.
Email Address
Enter your full email address. For example:
support@yourdomain.ie
Password
Enter the password for the email account.
Select Sign In or Continue.
Step Four
Apple Mail may say that it is unable to verify the account name or password.
This can happen when Mail cannot find the correct server settings automatically. If this happens, enter the manual settings shown in cPanel.
Email Address
Enter your full email address.
Username
Enter your full email address.
Password
Enter the password for the email account.
Account Type
Select IMAP.
Incoming Mail Server
Enter the incoming mail server shown in cPanel.
This will usually look similar to:
server-name.webhostingireland.ie
For example:
stanhope.webhostingireland.ie
Outgoing Mail Server
Enter the outgoing mail server shown in cPanel.
This will usually be the same server name used for the incoming mail server.
Select Sign In.
Step Five
Apple Mail will verify the account details.
You may be asked which apps you want to use with this account.
Make sure Mail is selected.
Notes can be left unticked unless you specifically want to use Notes with this account.
Select Done.
Step Six
Your Hosting Ireland email account should now appear in Apple Mail.
Send a test email to confirm that sending and receiving are both working.
If Apple Mail cannot connect
Check the following:
- Make sure you are using the full email address as the username.
- Make sure the password is the email account password, not your Client Area, cPanel or Mac password.
- Confirm that you can log in to Webmail using the same email address and password.
- Make sure the incoming and outgoing server names match the Secure SSL/TLS settings shown in cPanel.
- Check that there are no spaces before or after the email address, password or server names.
- If you recently reset the email password, remove the old saved password from Apple Mail and enter the new one manually.
- For most Hosting Ireland email accounts, the settings should be:
- Incoming IMAP
Port: 993
Security: SSL/TLS - Outgoing SMTP
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Password - If the account has been added but sending or receiving does not work, open Mail > Settings > Accounts, select the email account, then select Server Settings. Check that the incoming and outgoing server names match the settings shown in cPanel.
- Apple Mail may automatically manage some connection settings. If the port or SSL/TLS settings are incorrect, deselect Automatically manage connection settings, then check the port and SSL/TLS options manually. Apple’s current Mail guidance confirms this is where TLS/SSL and port settings are managed.
