How to set up email in Gmail on Android

Introduction

This guide explains how to add your Hosting Ireland email account to the Gmail app on an Android phone or tablet.

Most Android devices include the Gmail app by default. Gmail can be used to check non-Gmail email accounts, including Hosting Ireland email accounts.

We recommend using IMAP when setting up your email account. IMAP keeps your emails stored on the mail server and syncs them between Webmail and your devices. For example, if you read or delete an email in Gmail on Android, the same change will show in Webmail and on any other devices using IMAP.

Before you start

Before setting up your email account, make sure you have:

  • Created the email account in cPanel.
  • The full email address you want to add.
  • The password for that email account.
  • Your incoming and outgoing mail server settings.

For help creating an email account, see:

How to create an email account

For help finding your email settings, see:

We also recommend logging in to Webmail before setting up the account in Gmail. This confirms that the email address and password are correct.

For help logging in to Webmail, see:

How to log in to Webmail

If you cannot log in to Webmail, reset the email password first:

How to reset your email password

Step One

Open the Gmail app on your Android device.

The Gmail app may be shown on your home screen, in your app drawer, or inside a Google folder.

Step Two

In the Gmail app, select the account icon in the top right-hand corner.

This may show your initials, profile picture, or another account already set up on the device.

Step Three

Select Add another account.

Step Four

Enter the email address you want to add.

Select Manual setup.

Step Five

You may be asked what type of account you want to add.

Select Other.

Step Six

Select Personal (IMAP).

We recommend Personal (IMAP) for most customers because it keeps your mailbox synced between Gmail, Webmail and any other devices using the same email account.

Step Seven

Enter the password for the email account, then select Next.

This must be the password for the email address you are setting up.

It is not your Client Area password, cPanel password, Google password or Gmail password.

Step Eight

You will now see the Incoming server settings screen.

Gmail may fill in the Username and Password automatically.

Check the following:

Username
Enter your full email address.

Password
Enter the password for the email account.

Server
Replace the server shown by Gmail with the incoming server shown in cPanel.

This will usually look similar to:
server-name.webhostingireland.ie

For example:
stanhope.webhostingireland.ie

Select Next.

Step Nine

You will now see the Outgoing server settings screen.

Make sure Require sign-in is switched on.

Gmail may fill in the Username and Password automatically.

Check the following:

Username
Enter your full email address.

Password
Enter the password for the email account.

SMTP server
Replace the server shown by Gmail with the outgoing server shown in cPanel.

This will usually be the same server name used for the incoming server.

Select Next.

Step Ten

You will now see the Account options screen.

The default options are suitable for most customers.

We recommend leaving Sync email for this account switched on.

You can also choose whether Gmail should notify you when new emails arrive and whether attachments should download automatically when connected to WiFi.

Android may also ask for notification permissions. Allow notifications if you want to receive alerts when new emails arrive.

Select Next.

Step Eleven

You will now see the final account setup screen.

Account name
This is a label for the account on your device. You can leave this as your email address or enter something easier to recognise.

Your name
Enter the name or business name you want people to see when you send them email.

For example:
Hosting Ireland Tutorials

Select Next.

Step Twelve

Your Hosting Ireland email account has now been added to Gmail.

To switch between email accounts in Gmail, select the account icon in the top right-hand corner, then choose the account you want to view.

If setup fails

If Gmail cannot connect to the account, check the following:

  • Make sure the username is your full email address.
  • Make sure the password is the email account password, not your Client Area, cPanel, Google or Gmail password.
  • Confirm that you can log in to Webmail using the same email address and password.
  • Make sure the incoming server matches the incoming hostname shown in cPanel.
  • Make sure the outgoing SMTP server matches the outgoing hostname shown in cPanel.
  • Check that there are no spaces before or after the email address, password or server name.
  • If you recently reset the email password, remove the old saved password from Gmail and enter the new one manually.

If Gmail asks for port or security settings, use the Secure SSL/TLS settings shown in cPanel.

For most Hosting Ireland email accounts, this will be:

Incoming IMAP
Port: 993
Security: SSL/TLS

Outgoing SMTP
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
