Introduction
This guide explains how to add your Hosting Ireland email account to Mozilla Thunderbird using IMAP.
IMAP keeps your mailbox synced between Thunderbird, Webmail and any other devices you use.
Before you start
Before setting up your email account, make sure you have:
- Created the email account in cPanel.
- The full email address you want to add.
- The password for that email account.
- Your incoming and outgoing mail server settings.
For help creating an email account, see:
How to create an email account
For help finding your email settings, see:
How to find your email settings
We also recommend logging in to Webmail before setting up the account on your Thunderbird application. This confirms that the email address and password are correct.
For help logging in to Webmail, see:
If you cannot log in to Webmail, reset the email password first:
How to reset your email password
Step One
Open Thunderbird.
If this is the first email account being added to Thunderbird, you may be taken straight to the Add your email address screen.
If you see this screen, go straight to Step Four.
If Thunderbird is already set up with another email account, continue to Step Two.
Step Two
Select the Settings icon in the bottom left of Thunderbird.

Step Three
Select Account Settings.
Select New Account, then Mail Account.
You will now be taken to the Add your email address screen.

Step Four
Enter the following details:
Full name
Enter the name you want people to see when you send them email.
Email address
Enter your full email address.
Select Manual configuration.

Step Five
Enter the incoming server settings shown in cPanel.
Use:
Protocol: IMAP
Hostname: enter the incoming server shown in cPanel
Port: 993
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal password
Username: your full email address
Once the incoming server settings have been entered, select Continue.

Step Six
Enter the outgoing server settings shown in cPanel.
Use:
Protocol: SMTP
Hostname: enter the outgoing server shown in cPanel
Port: 465
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal password
Username: your full email address
Select Test.
Thunderbird may show that it is probing the server. This is expected after selecting Test.
Once the test has completed, the Continue button should become available.
Select Continue.

Step Seven
Enter your email account password.
You can choose whether Thunderbird should remember the password.
If this is your own private device, keeping Remember password selected will stop Thunderbird asking for the password each time it checks for email.
If this is a shared or public device, do not save the password.
Select Continue.

Step Eight
Thunderbird may show the Account Hub screen after the account has been added.
Select Finish.
Your email account should now appear in Thunderbird.

If Thunderbird cannot connect
Check the following:
Make sure the username is your full email address.
Make sure the password is the email account password, not the Client Area or cPanel password.
Check that the incoming and outgoing hostnames match the values shown in cPanel.
Check that IMAP is using port 993 with SSL/TLS.
Check that SMTP is using port 465 with SSL/TLS.
Check that the authentication method is Normal password.
Try logging in to Webmail using the same email address and password. If Webmail does not accept the password, reset the email password in cPanel and then update it in Thunderbird.
