How to set up email on iPhone or iPad

Introduction

This guide explains how to add your Hosting Ireland email account to Apple Mail on an iPhone or iPad.

We recommend using IMAP when setting up your email account. IMAP keeps your emails stored on the mail server and syncs them between Webmail and your devices. For example, if you read or delete an email on your iPhone, the same change will show in Webmail and on any other device using IMAP.

Before you start

Before setting up your email account, make sure you have:

  • Created the email account in cPanel.
  • The full email address you want to add.
  • The password for that email account.
  • Your incoming and outgoing mail server settings.

For help creating an email account, see:

How to create an email account

For help finding your email settings, see:

How to find your email settings

We also recommend logging in to Webmail before setting up the account on your iPhone or iPad. This confirms that the email address and password are correct.

For help logging in to Webmail, see:

How to log in to Webmail

If you cannot log in to Webmail, reset the email password first:

How to reset your email password

Step One

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app.

Step Two

Scroll down and select Apps.

If you are using an older version of iOS or iPadOS, Mail may appear directly in Settings instead.

Step Three

Select Mail.

Step Four

Select Mail Accounts.

Step Five

Select Add Account.

Step Six

You will now see several account type options.

Select Other.

Step Seven

Select Add Mail Account.

Step Eight

Enter the first set of account details.

Name
Enter your name or business name. This is the name people will see when you send them an email.

Email
Enter your full email address. For example:

support@yourdomain.ie

Password
Enter the password for the email account.

Description
Enter a label for the account. This is only shown on your device. For example:

Hosting Ireland Email

Once the details have been entered, select Next.

Step Nine

Make sure IMAP is selected at the top of the screen.

We recommend IMAP for most customers because it keeps your emails synced between Webmail and your devices.

Step Ten

Under Incoming Mail Server, enter the following details.

Host Name
Enter the incoming mail server shown in cPanel.

This will usually look similar to:

server-name.webhostingireland.ie

For example:

stanhope.webhostingireland.ie

Username
Enter your full email address.

Password
Enter the password for the email account.

Step Eleven

Under Outgoing Mail Server, enter the following details.

Host Name
Enter the outgoing mail server shown in cPanel.

This will usually be the same server name used for the incoming mail server.

Username
Enter your full email address.

Password
Enter the password for the email account.

Important: On Apple devices, the outgoing Username and Password fields may show as Optional. For Hosting Ireland email, these details are required. Make sure you enter the same email address and password used for the incoming mail server.

Once all details have been entered, select Next.

Step Twelve

Your iPhone or iPad will now verify the account details.

If the details are accepted, you will be taken to the final account options screen.

Make sure Mail is switched on.

Notes can be left switched off unless you specifically want to use notes with this account.

Select Save.

Step Thirteen

Your Hosting Ireland email account has now been added to Apple Mail.

Open the Mail app on your iPhone or iPad and check that you can send and receive email.

If setup fails

If your iPhone or iPad cannot verify the account, check the following:

  • Make sure you are entering the full email address as the username.
  • Make sure the email password is correct.
  • Confirm that you can log in to Webmail using the same email address and password.
  • Make sure the incoming and outgoing host names match the settings shown in cPanel.
  • Make sure the outgoing username and password have been entered, even if the device says they are optional.
  • Check that there are no spaces before or after the email address, password or server name.

If you recently reset the email password, remove the old saved password from your device and enter the new one manually.
